Effect of turbostratic disorder on the staging phase diagram of lithium-intercalated graphitic carbon hosts.

چکیده
The staging phase transitions which occur during the intercalation of lithium in graphitic carbons were probed by in situ x-ray-diffraction and electrochemical methods. Turbostratic disorder ~a random rotation or translation between adjacent graphene layers! in graphitic carbons ~heat treated above 2200°C! affects the formation of staged phases because lithium does not insert between randomly stacked graphene layers. We call these interlayer spaces ‘‘blocked galleries,’’ which frustrate the formation of the regular sequence of full and empty galleries, characteristic of staged phases. Higher staged phases, like stage 4 and stage 3, are eliminated as the probability P for turbostratic disorder increases in graphitic carbons made at temperatures near 2300 °C. Here, a staging phase diagram is developed in the P-x plane, where x is the lithium concentration in Li xC6 , which demonstrates how the turbostratic disorder affects staging.

Effect of turbostratic disorder in graphitic carbon hosts on the intercalation of lithium.
The intercalation of lithium into graphite was discovered in the 1950's.' After that, many studies focused on the staged phases ' that are formed during lithium intercalation in graphite and in graphitic carbon types. Safran concluded that the staging phenomenon is the result of the competition between interlayer repulsive and in-plane attractive interactions between the intercalated lithium. S...
متن کاملIntercalated graphitic carbon nitride: a fascinating two-dimensional nanomaterial for an ultra-sensitive humidity nanosensor.
We develop a novel humidity nanosensor based on intercalated graphitic carbon nitride (g-C(3)N(4)) nanosheets fabricated by a facile thermal polymerization of common urea in the presence of LiCl as the intercalated guest under air and ambient pressure. The response and recovery times of an optimal nanosensor can reach ∼ 0.9 s and ∼ 1.4 s, respectively, which are superior to most of the traditio...
متن کاملEffect of Lithium-ion Intercalation on the Tensileproperties of Carbon Fibres for Energy Storagecomposites
Carbon fibres can be used as structural electrodes because they have a high tensile properties-to-weight ratio and a graphitic structure which enables lithium-ion intercalation. Carbon fibre specimens were used as electrodes in laboratory cells. It was found that the fibre undergoes an ultimate tensile strength drop and an axial expansion which depend on the measured capacity. The results sugge...
متن کاملTHE ROLE OF CARBON IN REFRACTORIES
Some of the scientific principles underlying the role of carbon and graphite in graphitic refractories are considered, with emphasis on the graphite phase. The highly anisotropic nature ofgraphite is a key factor in its ability to modify the properties of oxide refractories, resulting in the potential for anisotropy in the subsequent graphitic composite, depending upon the fabrication condition...

In the present study, the effect of Iron Nitrate as catalytic precursor to in situ formation of nano-Fe particles in phenolic resin and microstructural evolution of MgO-C refractories has been investigated. Therefore, various samples according to matrix section formulation of low carbon MgO-C refractories (LCMCR’s) with 0 and 6 wt% (Fe/Phenolic resin) were prepared and phase and microstructure ...
